A few weeks ago John Oliver interviewed the Dalai Lama for his show Last Week Tonight. I would be the first to admit that what I know of the Dalai Lama is very limited. I did not know that he has been in exile from Tibet for over 30 years. The intro clip to interview was comforting to know that I was not the only one who needed to know more about the Dalai Lama.
Any interview by John Oliver would be poignant and funny. His interview with the Dalai Lama is no exception. The Dalai Lama conjures images of seriousness and serenity, but the interview is anything but serious.
In a nutshell, John Oliver asks the Dalai Lama about his thoughts being called the devil by the Chinese government. The Dalai Lama’s response was not of anger or judgment towards who call him the devil. Of course, his answer should not come as a surprise. He is the Dalai Lama after all.
Can we be like the Dalai Lama? We may never know, but we can try. The next time someone says something unflattering about me, I would try my best not to react too negatively. Then maybe that would be a start.
